The Forest That Burned to Stay Alive
If you walk through a stand of shortleaf pines in the Ozarks right now, you’ll catch something on the breeze that most people mistake for allergies. That golden dust drifting through May sunlight is actually pine pollen, and those trees are doing exactly what they’ve done every spring for thousands of years — carrying on.
What most people don’t know is that shortleaf pines aren’t just surviving in the Ozarks. They’re thriving because of fire, not in spite of it.
I think about this every time I hear someone say they want to protect nature by leaving it completely alone. The Ozarks don’t work that way. For millennia, people set low fires through these forests during the dormant season, and the shortleaf pine evolved to expect it. The fires cleared out competing hardwoods, released nutrients back into the thin rocky soil, and triggered something remarkable in those pinecones — a heat response that actually opens them up and releases their seeds.
Take that fire away, and the pines start losing ground to oaks and hickories that shade them out.
On this day in 1908, President Theodore Roosevelt proclaimed the Ozark National Forest, setting aside nearly a million acres in Arkansas for conservation. A few decades later, Missouri followed with the creation of Mark Twain National Forest in 1939, now covering 1.5 million acres of second-growth forest. Most of those trees came up after the intense logging around 1900, when crews cleared the old-growth pines so thoroughly that some folks thought they’d never come back.
But they did come back. Because even though the loggers took the big trees, they couldn’t take the fire history written into the land itself.
An Experiment to Try
Here’s something you can do with your kids this week that will stick with them longer than any worksheet. Find a shortleaf pinecone — they’re smaller than you’d expect, about two to three inches, with little prickles on each scale. Bring a few home and put them in the oven at around 140 degrees Fahrenheit for about twenty minutes. Watch what happens. The scales will open up and release seeds that have been waiting, sometimes for years, for the heat signal that tells them it’s safe to grow.
That’s called serotiny, and it’s the pine’s way of reading fire like a calendar.
After you’ve done the experiment, pull up a topographic map of Mark Twain National Forest and look at the terrain together. Talk about where fires would have moved, where they would have stopped at creeks or rocky outcrops, how the land itself shaped the forest we see today. This isn’t just science. It’s learning to read a landscape the way people used to — by paying attention to what the land remembers.
Understanding Conservation
